John will help us to identify the many edible plants that can be found growing in our hedgerows, woods and fields. Wild food and mushroom expert John Wright will guide you safely through the pleasures and perils of nature’s harvest.
We’ll spend morning and afternoon sessions roaming through the fields and woods around Croan, identifying and gathering edible crops. We’ll return to Croan House after each session to prepare and cook our finds.
During your stay your host, Francis, will also introduce you to life at Croan. Together you will meet the animals, take a look inside the bee hives and enjoy some 'made earlier' foraging treats.
As the course is over 2 days there will be plenty of time to tailor the content to suit you.
We'll also have local producers stop by during the course to showcase some of their products including some very special local Beer!

John Wright has featured regularly on the River Cottage TV shows and is one of the UK’s foremost experts on wild food foraging. John’s foraging courses are in huge demand and we are delighted that he was able to fit in a late-summer foray in Kilkenny. As well as being an expert in wild food, John has also made a name for himself as a prolific home brewer. We’ll be putting John’s expertise to use during the course so that participants can take homwe reciopes for making delicious (and free) booze! We’ll even have some that ‘we made earlier’ for participants to enjoy. John has written four of the River Cottage handbooks – Hedgerow, Mushrooms, Edible Seashore and his most recent addition, Booze. He is also the author of ‘The Naming of the Shrew: A Curious History of Latin Names’ and in June, John released his latest book, ‘A Natural History of the Hedgerow and ditches, dykes and dry stone walls’, a fascinating look behind the garden hedge and into the rich world of hedgerows and boundaries across Great Britain and Ireland. |
