Explore the Magic of Autumn Mushroom Foraging in Kilkenny

As the crisp autumn air rolls into the stunning countryside surrounding Croan Cottages in Kilkenny, nature presents a wonderful opportunity to connect with the outdoors: mushroom foraging! Nestled next to the Castlemorres Woodlands, our cottages offer the perfect base for a mushroom-hunting adventure. Whether you’re visiting with family or friends, foraging is a fun and educational way to enjoy the natural beauty of the area while discovering some delicious seasonal treasures.

Autumn is the prime time to explore the woods for wild mushrooms, and if you’re new to foraging, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered with a beginner-friendly guide to three easy-to-identify edible mushrooms, as well as two dangerous ones you’ll want to avoid. We’ve even included links to royalty-free images to help you with identification.

3 Edible Mushrooms to Forage

1. Chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius)

The bright orange-golden color of Chanterelles is a dead giveaway for this popular edible mushroom. Found in mossy areas or nestled around trees in Castlemorres Woodlands, they emit a slight apricot fragrance, making them a joy to stumble upon. They are often in clusters, so when you find one, look around – there’s usually more!

Their mild, peppery taste makes them perfect for pastas, soups, or just sautéed in butter. The wavy caps and forked, gill-like ridges make chanterelles easy to identify and an ideal choice for beginners.

2. Giant Puffball (Calvatia gigantea)

iant Puffballs are practically impossible to miss. These massive white mushrooms, sometimes growing as large as a football, tend to appear in open fields or at the edges of forests, including the open spaces near Croan Cottages. You’ll know you’ve found one if it looks like a soft, white ball sitting on the ground.

Make sure to slice them open and check the inside – it should be a solid, pure white. Any dark or developing gills mean it’s not a true puffball and should be avoided. Once harvested, puffballs can be sliced, seasoned, and fried for a tasty meal that’s as impressive as it is delicious!

3. Field Mushroom (Agaricus campestris)

The Field Mushroom, closely related to the common button mushroom, is another excellent find for foragers in the Kilkenny countryside. Typically appearing in pastures after rainfall, they feature white caps and pink gills that darken to chocolate brown as they mature.

They are perfect for a hearty stew or risotto, bringing an earthy flavor to any dish. Just be sure to double-check that the gills are dark brown before picking – this helps ensure you’re not confusing them with toxic lookalikes (we’ll discuss those next).

2 Dangerous Mushrooms to Avoid

1. Death Cap (Amanita phalloides)

The Death Cap is infamous for being one of the most dangerous mushrooms in the world, responsible for the majority of mushroom poisoning fatalities. Found near broadleaf trees, including oak, it can sometimes grow in the same woodlands as edible species, making it a serious hazard for foragers.

Death Caps have pale green or yellowish caps, white gills, and a bulbous base encased in a white sac. Even a small bite can cause life-threatening liver and kidney damage. Never pick a mushroom unless you are 100% certain of its identity.

2. False Chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca)

Though not as dangerous as the Death Cap, the False Chanterelle is still a mushroom to avoid. It can easily be confused with the real chanterelle due to its orange hue. However, false chanterelles have more distinct, crowded gills and a less vibrant color. Eating them may cause mild gastrointestinal distress – certainly not the kind of foraging memory you want!
