We hope that they’ll last until Easter.

When we did our first check of the hives in Spring, we were very worried about our poor bees. The winter had been very cold and we thought it likely that one or more of the hives would have died.
What we saw during that inspection was, we thought, worse than we feared. There were lots of dead bees – one hive had completely failed and the other 2 looked like they were on their last legs. Even in the tiny populations that remained we couldn’t see any queens and it looked like they were on their way out!
The problem was, it didn’t look like the cold had gotten to them. There were lots of pupae dead in their cells and so we thought that one of the Foul Brood diseases had struck.
We resolved, at the time, to burn all of the hives as this seemed to be the only way to prevent Foul Brood from spreading. But we couldn’t bring ourselves to do it while there were still bees coming and going.
How glad I am that we held off! Today’s inspection of the hives shows that the 2 which survived the winter are thriving. The populations are massive and they ...

We have just been visited by the Pre-school class from Kells Resource Centre.
Thankfully the sun shone and everyone had a great time feeding the animals, picking strawberries, playing on the lawn and ticking off the finds on the nature trail! I think that the ride in the big bus might have been the highlight for some though!

30 kids under 5 and not a tear shed all morning – a great success! We might host some more school trips in kilkenny.

Our champion native wild cherry tree (Prunus Avium) may be almost 270 years old but it still puts on an impressive display when in bloom, which it is at the moment.
The tree is almost 70 ft in height (20m) and when the sunlight catches the blossom, it really seems to glow!
The tree forms a part of the drive leading to Croan House and Cottages and we suspect that Cherry may have been inter-planted with the Lime Trees when they were planted in 1743. This specimen is the only Blossom tree remaining now.

As it was a beautiful, crisp night we decided to do some bat detection.
With book and bat detector in hand we set about searching under the trees on the avenue and around the pond.
It took some time to attune our ears to the chips, ticks, plops and smacks which we could hear as the bats hunted for food high above us.
During the search we identified Common Pipistrelles, Soprano Pipistrelles, Leislers and Natterers. The Natterer is supposed to be quite rare, so we are delighted to be providing a home for some of them!
Thanks to Andrew from Alana Ecology for providing the bat gear!

The people at Irish Ferries have developed some videos on angling holidays in Ireland.
While we all know that there is some amazing fishing to be had in Ireland, a lot of anglers in the UK don’t realise how accessible, under-fished and free our waters are.
Even right on our doorstep here at Croan Cottages, there are some stunning fishing opportunities:
The King’s River in Kells is excellent for Trout on the fly.
The Nore offers larger Trout and an excellent fun of Salmon, again fished on the fish.
The Barrow is more well known for Coarse fishing and there are some large Bream shoals in the river.
Oaklands, Brandon lake, Castlecomer and the Waterford trout lakes all offer day fishing waters for a variety of species.
We can offer more information when you arrive to help plan a day’s fishing trip. In the meantime, take a look at the Irish Ferries video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_j4zlltkiY
